The low salinity zone occurs at the inland edge of the estuarine habitat where average daily salinities range from 1 to 6 practical salinity units (psu).
In an estuary, the area where fresh water meets and mixes with salt water comprises the estuarine habitat that supports multiple life stages for a diversity of fishes. The low salinity zone moves upstream and downstream depending on flows and tides. This transition from salt to fresh water and how it changes through time is thought to be an important factor in estuarine health.
