best management practices

« Back to Glossary Index

Best management practices (BMPs) are activities, maintenance procedures, prohibition of certain practices, and other management activities that work to reduce pollutants from entering waterways.  BMPs can be either non-structural, such as cover crops and pollution prevention, or structural, such as detention ponds and bioswales.  BMPs can be applied to both point and nonpoint sources of pollution.
