US Geological Survey: California Water Science Center
The USGS works with partners to monitor, assess, conduct targeted research, and deliver information on a wide range of water resources and conditions including streamflow, groundwater, water quality, and water use and availability. Nationwide, there are 27 Water Science Centers plus 1 integrated Science Center as of September 2019 that contribute valuable water science to all 50 States.
The USGS California Water Science Center collects basic hydrologic data for processing, analysis, dissemination, and archiving; provides data and science for water management decisions; provides data, models, and science to support groundwater management; assesses the quality of groundwater resources; conducts science about the effects of oil and gas production on groundwater; and continually develops tools and technical capabilities to meet ever-changing demands.
The California Water Science Center's programs include:
- Measurement and Monitoring: Water Quality Monitoring, Water use, Wildfires and Water Quality, Surface Water Quality, Streamflow, Contaminants, Remote Sensing
- Tools for water management: Hydrologic modeling, Water Quality Modeling, California Post-Fire Debris-Flow Maps, Current California Streamflow Conditions, Current California Runoff, Advanced Capabilities and Research
- Groundwater: Groundwater Ambient Monitoring & Assessment (GAMA), Science and develop tools to support implementation of SGMA, Aquifer Storage & Recovery, Seawater Intrusion, Land Subsidence, Oil, Gas, and Groundwater
- Ecosystems: Bay-Delta, Sediment, Restoration, Watersheds, Climate change
