National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries or NMFS)
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS or NOAA Fisheries) is the federal agency responsible for the stewardship of the nation's ocean resources and their habitat. The main nexus of NMFS with California's freshwater systems are anadromous fish, such as Central Valley salmon and steelhead.
The National Marine Fisheries Service is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) which is housed under the Department of Commerce.
Specific programs:
- Species: Conserving salmon and steelhead, Habitat restoration, Restoration of salmon and steelhead habitat, Salmon and steelhead hatcheries, Ecosystem-based management, Dams and fish passage
- Science: Northwest science, Southwest science, Biophysical ecology research on California salmon and green sturgeon, Social and economic research on California’s ocean, Coastal, and freshwater resources
- Regulatory: Endangered Species Act consultations, Endangered Species Act permits and authorizations on the West Coast, Habitat Conservation Plans, Safe Harbor Agreements, List of ESA threatened & endangered species
