The State Water Resources Control Board will hold two workshops this week to present information and gather public input for the administrative draft of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for hexavalent chromium.
Board staff will conduct the workshops with video and teleconference participation only on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday at 9 a.m. To watch the workshops, follow the link at CalEPA Public Webcasts. Those wishing to make comments during the workshop may join the Zoom broadcast by following the links for Tuesday or Thursday.
Hexavalent chromium, commonly called chromium-6, is an odorless and tasteless heavy metal that occurs throughout the environment and may be found in groundwater naturally or as a result of industrial sites that fail to follow proper disposal methods for contaminated waste. Studies have linked long-term exposure to a risk of cancer when ingested.
The proposal to be discussed at the workshops is an administrative draft only and the MCL will be considered for final adoption by the board only after an extended public comment period and once recommended changes are considered.
These workshops are not part of the formal rulemaking under the Administrative Procedure Act. The formal rulemaking process for the hexavalent chromium regulations will be begin later this year after receipt and consideration of comments on the administrative draft.
