Take the San Francisco Bay Data Exploration Challenge!

Help us learn about the Bay! Millions of measurements of water quality have been made in the Bay. These data reside in a publicly accessible database (cd3.sfei.org). We have learned a lot from these data but not all of the data have been analyzed.

In this year’s scenario, we want you to help us identify the safest places to go fishing, with the lowest exposure to mercury and PCBs. Many people from different ethnic communities consume fish from San Francisco Bay, including low-income groups that depend on Bay fish as an inexpensive source of nutrition. However, not all fish from the Bay can be safely consumed regularly, due to mercury and PCBs, two contaminants that are present above thresholds for concern.

Cash prizes will be awarded to high school and university students for the best graphics or analysis. More information is available on the SFEI website: https://www.sfei.org/events/datachallenge.
