Yesterday, four San Joaquin Valley water districts led by the Tulare Lake Basin Water Storage District, sent a letter to Governor Newsom objecting to any further temporary funding of the Delta Conveyance Project, stating it is ‘not appropriate’ to continue funding at this time, given the current economic conditions and uncertainty over State Water Project supplies.
The letter notes that the Delta Conveyance Design and Construction Authority is anticipating funding from the State Water Contractors through June of 2020, and alleges a number of Contractors have yet to fund this request; the water districts are concerned as DWR has provided temporary funding in the past and will do so again. They also note that the most recently negotiated Agreement in Principle (AIP) for the SWP Delta Conveyance Contract Amendment was opposed by Tulare Lake Basin WSD and at least one-third of the SWP Contractors.
“We do not want to participate in the DCF, and we object to DWR loaning our money to sustain the project. Given the State faces its harshest economic time in history, we ask that DCF funding by the State be placed on hold,” the letter states.
The letter is signed by representatives of the Tulare Lake Basin Water Storage District, Empire-Westside Irrigation District, County of Kings, and Oak Flat Water District.
