You may remember that, about two years ago, we launched the California Water Library.
The Library evolved in response to a growing problem: How to find quality, in-depth information on California water issues quickly and confidently. CWL provides easy, organized access to a carefully chosen collection of authoritative information about California’s myriad water issues.
The Library now provides streamlined links to reports and documents generated by the research community, as well as state and federal agencies and non-governmental organizations. More resources are being added daily to meet our mission of arming policy makers, water managers, and reporters with the most up-to-date and best possible resources.
We have big goals for next year, and we’d like you to consider supporting the continued expansion of the Library with your tax-deductible donation before January 1, 2020.
Our top three goals for 2020 look like this:
#1 – Retain more of the services of Emily Green. As a journalist with decades of experience, Emily has reported on science and the environment for the UK Independent, Guardian, New Statesman, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and KCET, among others. Her award-winning work, including a definitive five-part series on Las Vegas’s pipeline to Eastern Nevada, is linked at www.chanceofrain.com
At the library, Emily brings first principles research methods to water literature by mining the indexes and bibliographies of key reports. Nowhere else will you find links to all of the water documents referenced in California’s Fourth Climate Change Assessment available at one site. The upshot is a powerful time-saver for researchers, journalists, and policy wonks who need to dive deep.
Goal #2 – Adding an image/video gallery to the Library. We’ll be curating maps, diagrams, graphics, historical photos, videos, and more so you can find just the visual you need.
Goal #3 – Website development and further refinements. Making searches easy for others is expensive for us. Work toward systematically improving how search results may be winnowed is ongoing and needs financial support.
These 3 goals work toward a larger goal: Enhancing and growing the premier online water resource for use today, and for the use of future water professionals, journalists, and researchers.
Of course, every new goal needs one thing: money.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could just snap our fingers and see our vision instantly implemented by the best talent in water research and journalism?
Of course, that’s not realistic, but we think it’s very realistic to ask you and other supporters and sponsors for an additional $50,000 in funding for our 2020 Library expansion.
