Hint: Funding for Delta programs falls far short of other important ecosystems
How much does the federal government spend in the San Francisco Bay and the Delta relative to other important ecosystems around the country? Far less, Jared Blumenfeld, Regional Administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Southwest Region 9, pointed out at the 12th Biennial State of the San Francisco Estuary Conference on Oakland in September of this year.
He presented the above slide, noting that the San Francisco Bay area receives only $4.8 million, while the Puget Sound has $28 million, the Chesapeake Bay has $73 million, and the Great Lakes has $300 million. “So when you think about things you can put on your agenda in the year ahead, maybe there’s a need out there for San Francisco Bay that may be larger than $4.8 million,” he said “I would just suggest maybe. You get to decide.”
