Dear readers … Maven’s Notebook needs your help!

Dear Readers,

Maven’s Notebook is now in its third year and the following continues to grow. Since the beginning, readership has steadily grown and to date there has been 972,000 page views – we have almost reached one million! This clearly indicates the need for access to unbiased information about this most critical issue, California’s water supply. From drought proclamations, snow surveys and the release of the latest report, breaking news alerts meant Notebook readers were always among the first to know.

Four quotesMaven’s Notebook has received a small grant this year from the Rose Foundation; however those dollars will only cover a few months of operations. I am grateful for their support for the last several years, but it has become urgent to fund raise to keep the Notebook afloat. I need your help! Maven’s Notebook is helping to change the dialog on California water and I am reaching out to my readers because you know first-hand the quality and value of the materials I produce and the events I cover.

Your tax deductible donation to Maven’s Notebook will ensure continued unbiased coverage and reporting on these critical issues. The cost to maintain the caliber and relevance of the Notebook has been modest but nonetheless there are still expenses for travel, conference fees, subscriptions, internet and web development, office expenses and last but not least, my salary. Every contribution is appreciated and no donation is too small.

Articles from the Notebook are picked up by water news aggregators and special interest websites, cited in research journals and blogs, and quoted at numerous presentations and seminars.   The inclusion of science alongside water policy coverage, another unique feature of the blog, recognizes that Delta science and policy need to go hand in hand, and seeks to bridge that science-policy gap. Never before have water wonks and concerned citizens had access to a wealth of unbiased information on water issues – and in real time. This raises the quality, accuracy and relevance of the dialog, ultimately improving the debate and accountability of our leaders.

The discussions and decisions are heating up and there are a number of key events a before us:

  • The controversial Cal Water Fix project is winding its way to a decision point
  • Agencies and stakeholders are grappling with implementation of the historic groundwater legislation
  • Implementation of the state’s first comprehensive Delta Plan continues
  • The State Water Board continues to work on the update of the Bay Delta Water Quality Control Plan, as well as deal with unprecedented drought conditions

Of course, these are only a few, and who knows what the future might bring. The Notebook plans to be there to monitor, track and inform you of the progress. I remain committed to maintaining the unbiased integrity of the Notebook and will cover these events for as long as I can.

Through the years, I have had the privilege to meet many Notebook readers. Knowing that some of you have followed my site since the beginning validates that I am on the right path and your words of appreciation and encouragement are immensely gratifying to me. For it is all of you showing up here that keeps me showing up here, too. After all, a blogger blogs to be read, and I feel truly feel blessed to be read by each and every one of you.

Keep the Notebook as your source of unbiased information flowing to and from the water community. With your support, we can continue to have a positive impact on California water issues in 2015.

With warmest regards,

Maven
