The California Water Foundation (CWF) issued the following statement from Executive Director Lester Snow after the California State Senate voted 26-1 to advance AB 1739, which now moves to the Assembly floor for a concurrence vote:
“We praise the work of the Senate for their leadership and good sense to advance this bill. Today’s bipartisan vote brought northerners, southerners and coastal representative together to move us significantly closer to joining other Western states in putting requirements in place to protect our vital groundwater supplies for the long haul. The Senate’s visionary action reflects the strong public opinion that we must protect groundwater supplies and provide the tools and authority for local agencies to better manage their groundwater. Recent public polling showed more than 70 percent polled want action now. Business leaders, water agencies, farmers, conservationists have worked tirelessly in a lengthy stakeholder process to create this landmark legislation. The pressure is now on the Assembly.”
