“Saying aggressive action is needed during what may be California’s worst drought in modern times, state officials on Friday announced a series of unprecedented actions to protect water supplies, including cutting water allocations from the State Water Project to zero for the first time in the project’s history.
The allocation cut was announced during a morning press conference at the Department of Water Resources (DWR) headquarters in Sacramento. Mark Cowin, director of DWR, and officials with other state and federal agencies outlined for reporters the actions agencies plan to take in order to hold back water in the state’s reservoirs for use later this year if severe drought continues.
“The harsh weather leaves us little choice,” said Cowin. “If we are to have any hope of coping with continued dry weather and balancing multiple needs, we must act now to preserve what water remains in our reservoirs.” … “
