Commonly called the "fastest-growing plant in the world", a single small water hyacinth can grow to cover 6,500 square feet of open water in a single growing season. This is particularly concerning to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) as mounds of the plants can foul the delta pumps, putting the delivery of water to Southern California at risk.
