ANNOUNCEMENT: Army Corps to consider temporary deviation to Success Lake operation

From the Army Corps of Engineers:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District released its draft environmental assessment and draft finding of no significant impact on April 26 for a water control manual deviation at Success Lake.

The Tule River Association is requesting permission to construct a sandbag barrier across the Success Lake spillway, increasing the reservoir’s elevation from 652.5 feet to 656.5 feet, plus two feet of freeboard. The additional elevation would provide an additional 10,000 acre-feet of storage. Releases would be managed to help reduce the potential for damaging flows to occur within the Tulare Lakebed area.

The operational changes would be in effect for approximately 90 days beginning in June 2017.

The draft documents are published on the district’s website at www.spk.usace.army.mil, and have been made available for review at the Porterville Public Library, Springville Branch Library and the Corps recreation center at Success Lake. Printed copies of the report are available upon request.

The draft documents will be available for public review and comment until May 7, 2017. The expedited public review period is necessary due to the limited time available before the start of the snow melt.

Written comments can be submitted through the postal mail or by email to the address listed in the public review letter. All comments received on the draft document will be considered and incorporated into the final EA, as appropriate.

The final report is scheduled to be released in May 2017.
