Participants may register for either Day 1 or Day 2, or both. Day 1 is broader in scope and mostly informational. Day 2 follows up on Day 1 with the planning of future monitoring designs for CECs in the Delta. Participation in both days is encouraged if you are involved with CECs and development of a CEC monitoring plan for the Delta.

 Day 1 Description and Goals

Constituents of Emerging Concern (CECs) are a large group of chemicals that may or may not pose a risk to human health and aquatic species. The State Water Board and Regional Water Quality Control Boards (Water Boards) have worked on several projects to monitor CECs and identify the CECs of highest risk to human health and the environment, but the efforts have not been well coordinated. Coordinating the efforts will more efficiently and effectively utilize State and local resources and work towards the overarching goal of developing a statewide strategy to address CECs. The purpose of this workshop is to share current state of knowledge on CECs and study efforts underway in the Bay-Delta and other areas of California and visit lessons learned.

Goals:

  • Information sharing. Share current state of knowledge on CECs and study efforts underway in the Bay-Delta and other areas of California. The goal of this information sharing is to bring participants to a common level of understanding regarding CECs; what has been done, what information gaps exist, and what risk analysis has been done.
  • Lessons learned. Share information on studies conducted and lessons learned.  What has worked and what has not been effective. This discussion will help participants adaptively manage their programs.
  • Statewide consideration. Discuss statewide interest for CECs, and the potential study types needed to inform future statewide consideration (e.g., pilot’s “risk-based” approach).

Please contact Dawit Tadesse (Dawit.Tadesse@waterboards.ca.gov) if you have questions about Day 1.

Day 2 Description and Goals

CECs encompass a vast number of chemicals that are generally unregulated in the United States including pharmaceuticals, flame retardants, pesticides, personal care products, commercial and industrial products, fragrances, hormones, antibiotics, and nanoparticles. The workshop will present the most recent information regarding CECs in the Delta and develop plans for future monitoring programs in this region. The proposed monitoring design will build off of monitoring strategies and locations from previously conducted studies and plans.

Key Questions to be Addressed:

  • What types of studies are most critical for the Delta?
  • Are there opportunities to partner with the Delta RMP, Bay RMP, SCCWRP, SFEI/ASC, and the Water Boards?

Please contact Thomas Jabusch (thomasj@sfei.org) if you have questions about Day 2.
